As I said in the last post I’m following the Instructables seen here. I’m probably going to do things a little differently as my bed is king size.

One of the comments showed king sized specs and I blindly followed them. I took the measurements to the hardware store and they cut it for me. I recommend doing this unless you really love sawing wood yourself like the author of the Instructables article.

The first thing I did was make the frame. I always use my Dremel with a drill bit attached to start off the holes. This makes the screws go in much easier.

After I set up the frame I screwed the slats into place.

I then attached the legs.

The result. This took me about three hours altogether. I also painted it white but you’ll have to wait until the next post to see that.

Total cost so far: $68.

This is the first post covering my venture in which I will attempt to create a bed from scratch. I’ve set my budget at $100 but seeing as all the beds that I like are over $1,000 I’m viewing it as a very loose budget.

This is a sketch of the bed that I drew at work while daydreaming. My room is painted Intellectual by Behr which is a very dark grey with some brown in it. I plan on making the two trees white for a neat contrast and the space in between the trees a padded cloth that matches the grey of the wall. The negative space created by the trees creates two people sized cushions for me and my other to lean against before we rest.

After scouring the internet for bed frame ideas and sales I settled on this one from Instructables. It’s a fairly basic frame which is what I was looking for. It’s also very cheap and uses very little wood, and everyone knows how fun it is to be green. I might add some details to the legs or I might make a skirt of some sort. Who knows? I’m spontaneous when it comes to design.

I love the idea of having magnetic letters on my fridge but whenever I see them in the store they are far too colorful and child-like for my place. It’s quite easy to change them with a can of spray paint. The result is a mix of childish fun and modern style.

I found some magnetic letters at the store for like 50 cents a package so I decided to take them home and make them mine. Some black textured spray paint did the trick.

(This is what the cardboard looked like after I removed the letters.

It has nothing to do with the final product, just looked neat.)

Instead of putting the letters on the fridge like most people do I decided to put them on the large metal closet doors that hide the water heater, air conditioning, and furnace.

Its brassy color put me off but I liked the shape and decided I would find a way to change its finish. Looking around the internet I found that several people had spray painted their chandelier, and while none of them looked amazing I decided to do it anyway.

First I took it apart so that I could only paint the metal. If you decide to do this yourself be sure to take pictures like the one above. My chandelier has about 40 parts and it’s hard enough putting it together using a picture as a guide.

I hung the chandelier under a ladder and arranged the metal pieces underneath. I gave each piece three light coats with Rust-Oleum’s brown hammered finish spray paint. I was surprised how much I loved the outcome, it doesn’t look spray painted at all.

Here is the newly painted chandelier in all its brown hammered glory!

(My wall art is wallpaper swatches from Anthropologie.)
